How to set your Grandfather Clock back one hour

Our advice would be... Stop the clock!

Stop your clock, by gently stopping the pendulum swinging.

Restart your clock an hour or so later.

Set the time by moving the minute hand forward an hour or so to set the correct time. Make sure you stop at each quarter and allow the clock to chime.

(Our grandfather clock set up video includes the procedure for moving the hands forward. You can watch it here.

A Brief history of Greenwich Mean Time and British Summer Time

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was established in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference, when it was decided to place the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, England.

British Summer Time (BST) was first established by the Summer Time Act 1916, after a campaign by builder William Willett, a keen supporter of outdoor activities - which is probably to be expected as a builder! Willett was concerned that in the summer people were still sleeping when the sun had risen, so he began a campaign to change the nation's clocks. He published his ideas in a small booklet called 'A Waste of Daylight'. Although William died before the act came into power, it was his ideas that paved the way for British Summer Time.

I have a long case grandfather clock. For the first time ever weight One touched base before weight Two (the chimer). I moved the hour hand but now the hour hand is midway between the hour numerals when the minute hand reaches the -top- 60 minute position. I cannot move the hour hand back or forward it is very stiff. What should I do please? Thank you
The hour hand is a push fit, it will be stiff but can be moved to whatever hour the clock has chimed. The centre weight will touch first if the clock has been on silent or night off or has missed chimes. The two outside weight operate the chimes the centre weight is the tick, if the clock has been ticking for a longer time than chiming the centre weight will touch first.
